Tips For Cutting Board Care

It is important that cutting boards, chopping blocks, charcuterie boards, cheese boards, serving trays and other wooden appliances be maintained to keep them in top condition to last a lifetime.

Never put a wooden board of any type in the dishwasher.

Wipe the surface of the board frequently with a dishcloth or sponge when preparing food. This will clean-up easier later.

Wash your cutting board soon after using it. This will prevent odours and flavours from passing from one meal to another.

Sanitize your cutting board after preparing raw meat. Use either a solution of 1 1/2 teaspoons of bleach in 4 cups of water or straight up vinegar.

Rub a half lemon over a board to freshen it up from perhaps onions or garlic. Let the juice sit for a few minutes then wipe the board dry.

Sprinkle baking soda over the cutting board to remove stubborn stains then rub with a warm, damp cloth and rinse away any remaining baking soda,

Use an abrasive scrubbing pad to remove any caked-on residue, it won't harm the surface.

Conditioning a Wood Cutting Board

A cutting board needs to be conditioned to keep it looking lustrous and shiny. Conditioning makes it somewhat waterproof and wont absorb moisture and thus fewer food odours.

A conditioned board can also help protect against bacteria and will help keep it from warping and splitting.

You should never use cooking oils to condition your board. It will become rancid over time, some oils quicker than others.

The best oil to use is food grade mineral oil, available online or at your pharmacy or grocery store in the laxative section. You can also use baby oil.

Your board is prepared before shipping with a healthy soaking in mineral oil and a coating of our Kate's Board Butter. A small tin of the butter is included with your shipment and more is available on our website.

How To Oil Your Cutting Board

Apply a small pool of mineral on your board, about the size of a quarter to start, and rub it all over the board, top, sides and back. Add more if needed. Prop it up against something and let it soak in overnight. In the morning wipe off any excess.

When using the Board Butter, rub in a small amount at a time all over the board. You can warm it up in some hot water if it's difficult to work. Then use your hand to rub it into the board. The warmth of your hand will soften the wax and push it further into the wood. Let it sit overnight and buff it in the morning.

It is good practise to oil the board monthly or more often if needed. When you find your board getting dull and gray looking, it is time to oil it. The Board Butter can be used a few times a year.
